Follow These Steps When Designing Custom Clothing Items For Your Clients

1. When working with clients in any product or service driven environment, especially apparel, you want to first find out how many units of the product they’re looking for, and when they want it. This is important for a couple of reasons.
a. It tells you how much time you have when you “start with the end in mind”
b. You can start working out deliverable dates when you know the end date. (i.e how long the designs will take, how long the printing will take, etc…)
2. Find out what the client wants immediately. This gives you enough lead time to get any questions answered and allows for any delays in the project schedule, customer follow-ups and any other important project milestones that need to be addressed.
3. Figure out if the items to be printed or embroidered are in stock. You must know if you even have all the materials needed to complete the project.
4. Follow up, follow up…I can’t stress this enough. Follow up with your clients with any delays or time constraints, you can always give an estimate how long is left in the process. This enhances the customer experience and builds trust.
Questions To Ask Yourself: Do you need to put a rush on the order? Are some of the items available and others not? Is the printer out of a certain color?
5. Figure out your fixed costs as soon as you have the pricing of your products. This will take some time depending on the variety of items, the quantity and the complexity of the design. Take your time with this step because this is how you get paid and you don’t want to leave money on the table because your pricing strategy was not where it should be.
